今日まで蓄積されてきた高度な科学の知識をさらに発展させ、有効活用していくために、科学、社会、政策のよりよいつながりが世界中で求められています。特に日本では、東日本大震災以降、科学、社会、政策の関係性に大きな変革が求められています。
科学、社会、政策をつなぐために、これまで世界中で様々な取り組みが進められてきました。このセッションでは、欧・米、アジア、アフリカから科学技術に関わる著名なリーダーを招き、21世紀の科学の役割と責任、社会との関係について討論します。
Climate change, economic crisis, natural disasters, terrorism, food safety, disease outbreaks - these are a handful of the complex challenges humanity is facing right now as a result of rapid globalisation which began following the end of the Cold War and the start of the information technology revolution.
In order to resolve these issues, we need to adapt the way scientific knowledge is created and applied. This means revolutionizing the way science, society, and policy interact with one another. The 2011 Japan earthquake was a wake up for the Japanese that bridges between science, society, and policy need to evolve.
Countries around the world have been working in different ways to resolve this issue, and today we invite leaders from Europe, the USA, Asia, and Africa to share their views on scientific responsibilities in the 21st century.

Alan Leshner received a Ph.D in physiological psychology from Rutgers University and an A.B. in psychology from Franklin and Marshall College. He has served as Professor of Psychology at Bucknell University, Deputy Director and Acting Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, and Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science, and serves on the US National Science Board.

Peter Tindemans received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics at Leiden University, and has since worked in science, technology and innovation policy in the Netherlands, and as a consultant for overseas governments, the World Bank, and UNESCO. He was President of the OECD Megascience Forum, and Chair of European Spallation Neutron Source. He has been active in EuroScience as Founding Member, Governing Board, ESOF Supervisory Board Member, and now Secretary-General since 2012.

Satoru Ohtake joined the science and technology administration in the Government of Japan in 1984, after receiving an M.S. in physics from the University of Tokyo. He has since engaged in policy planning and R&D management, and establishing the Government's Science and Technology Basic Plans (1996, 2001 and 2011). Since 2013, he has been in charge of overall management of JST as deputy to the JST president, as well as managing international affairs, science and technology information exchange and dissemination, and science communication programs.

Professor Sir Peter Gluckman trained in paediatric endocrinology. He was Executive Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, then foundation director of the Liggins Institute of the University of Auckland. In 2009 he was appointed the first Chief Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of New Zealand and in the same year conferred a knighthood. He is a recipient of New Zealand's highest scientific award, the Rutherford Medal.

Romain Murenzi received his Ph.D. in physics from the Catholic University of Louvain. He has served as Professor of physics at Clark Atlanta University in the USA. Between 2001 and 2009, he served as the Minister of Science and Technology in Rwanda. In 2010 became director of the Center for Science, Technology, and Sustainable Development at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland. He was appointed executive director of TWAS in April 2011.
南アフリカ出身。2005年より南アフリカ共和国科学技術省・国際部にて政府開発援助や二国間科学技術協力などの科学技術外交に従事。2013年より現職。
Eudy Mabuza joined to the international desk of the Department of Science and Technology of South Africa in 2005, serving ODA programme and bilateral S&T relations. She is, currently, serving as the Minister-Counsellors: S&T in Japan.

Tateo Arimoto has been been involved with the Japanese government's science and technology policymaking after studying physical chemistry at Kyoto University. He has served as Executive Research Fellow at the Economic and Social Research Institute of the Cabinet office, Director General of Science & Technology Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Education and Science, and Deputy Director-General of the Center for R&D Strategy at the Japan Science and Technology Agency.
